The Iconic Game Turns 20 – The Plastic Guitar That Bridged Generations Among Music Generations

Marking two decades since Guitar Hero hit the market across the Atlantic, offering players everywhere the opportunity to become a rock star. Not in reality, though you'd be hard-pressed telling that anyone who has nailed Free Bird’s lengthy instrumental break in front of a packed crowd of friends.

Created by the developers, Guitar Hero gave players a plastic guitar peripheral to match coloured notes scrolling down the display in time with the music. Each riff corresponded to particular chords, producing the sensation of an authentic live show.

The studio previously experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with RedOctane, which was purchased by the gaming giant during the mid-2000s. Together, they established the groundwork for an unlikely massively profitable franchise that had a remarkable influence on numerous musicians featured, showcasing decades-old groups to a new generation of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO from the developer, remembers the early financial challenges of licensing the recordings – even though initial releases primarily featured cover versions.

“We reproduced every song because the cost was so high,” he says. “Even with the necessary permissions alone, it was extremely difficult. We failed to secure bands like legendary groups – the publisher had virtually no money, and we were fairly certain it would fail. However, when Guitar Hero became a hit, and record sales airtime increased, all artists desired to participate.”

He continues: “One of the remarkable aspects was the number of mothers and fathers got in touch and thanked us for introducing their children to the music they loved. It became a multigenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Finds a New Audience

Northern Irish blues-rock band one featured act included their track on the 2008 game the popular installment. Lead musician the artist recalls the way the game brought classic rock to the forefront: “The game provided a larger, younger audience. Generally such music was considered music that was past it, but then once it got featured on the game and teenagers discovered it, suddenly it was cool. This validated the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It gave all our music renewed popularity.”

In 2008, the Answer’s first record was still not available stateside, meaning the game was a key medium for exposure for the group during their a North American tour opening for the rock giants. “Their crew were playing the song on the tour bus, and some of them recognized us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Titles and Lasting Influence

Music's heavyweight names quickly capitalised on the game's success, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen starring in specialized game editions centered around their music collections and related lore, visuals and legendary status. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, it was said to have made the band more money than any of their records. It sold well over 500,000 units in its first week, and demand for their songs saw an increase of up to 40% during an era when the music business was already collapsing.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered dedication within the community. Earlier this year, an online personality achieved a remarkable feat featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough anthem popularized through Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with almost identical gameplay but an array of customisation options. The song is challenging enough on expert mode, not to mention played at increased tempo and without missing every one of the thousands of cues. They stated requiring months of practice to accomplish.

“Guitar Hero offers a, fantasy thing. If you play other games, it doesn't imply you ought to pick up a real gun and go to war,” notes musician Herman Li.

The band previously completed a profitable run before Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, yet he explains it made them widely recognized. “I remember the record label calling to tell me that our selling albums rapidly,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we performed right ahead of the headliners at the event.”

Indeed, DragonForce’s exposure from Guitar Hero was so immense that it has threatened to overshadow everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track was used in a trailer for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I thought differently, but I’ve made peace with it,” Li says. “If you only listen to a single track, that's fine – each person has a unique path in music and I’m glad we’ve been part of people’s lives”.

Enduring Impact from the Iconic Controller

The best promotion, whether it’s for automobiles, apparel or games, goes further than selling something – it inspires a desire. Did Guitar Hero tap into that? “Precisely what we were aiming to achieve,” he confirms. “The excitement of being a rock star on the stage. From day one, the co-founders felt that there’s an instinctive human desire to create songs, and they wanted to leverage innovation to allow people to participate”.

Most of Guitar Hero games came out in just a half-decade between 2005 and 2010, featuring derivative titles such as DJ Hero, complete with a spinning deck, and Band Hero. After that, corporate focus on peripherals died down, aside from a short-lived revival in 2015.

Titles like Clone Hero and Fortnite Festival have maintained the community alive, with expectations of a new product from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has begun production on its debut music game. Original co-founders are both involved in advisory roles. Is the world prepared to welcome a new entry following the classic?

“We thought such titles could be similar to sports games allowing annual update every year,” he remarks. “With abundant fresh tracks that it could be perennially popular, thus I remain hopeful. There’s no reason why it can’t continue for future fans.”
