The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
